About Culture

The Himalayan region of the Kullu Valley has a rich and colourful cultural life. It is predominantly Hindu with its own indigenous myths and legends. Appropriately called the Valley of Gods, it is home to more than 360 gods and goddesses.

Each village has its own deity who is consulted in all matters of birth, marriage or death. On special occasions like fairs and festivals the village gods and goddesses are taken out in colourful processions by the villagers. Dressed in their finery they carry the brightly draped palanquin of their deity on the shoulders.

No celebration is considered complete without the 'Natti' -- the traditional form of community dancing. The fluttering flags and banners, the beat of drums, the blowing of trumpets, the melody of the 'shenai' (indian clarinet) and the rhythmic sway of the dancers all add a distinct verve and flavour to the procession. The whole valley reverberates with joy and the unfolding spectacle is a veritable feast to the eyes and ears.

Just imagine the impact of hundreds of such processions happening at the same time and in the same place. In fact, this can be witnessed during the yearly Dusshera Festival when most of the deities from all corners of the valley converge in Kullu to pay their respects to Lord Rama, the presiding deity of the region.

A visit to the Kullu Valley is an amazing and unforgettable experience, indeed.
